How Often Should You Treat Your Deck? A Guide for South African Homeowners
A well-built timber deck is more than a functional outdoor surface – it’s a statement piece, a gathering place, and a long-term investment. But even the highest quality timber needs the right treatment and care to maintain its appearance and structural integrity.
So how often should you treat your deck? The short answer: at least twice a year – but the truth is, it depends on your timber and its environment. Sun, shade, pool chemicals, and foot traffic all play a role — and the more often you treat it, the better your deck will look and last.
In this article, we break down everything you need to know about decking treatment frequency, timber-specific advice, and how to choose the right maintenance products.
Why Regular Decking Maintenance is Essential
Timber decking is constantly exposed to the elements – and not just sunshine and rain. To truly keep the look and feel of your deck the way you envisioned it to be when you bought it, you need to take into account the below factors, and again, we can’t emphasize enough how treating your deck more often than not is the winning strategy.
Let’s take a closer look at what your deck goes through:
- UV rays cause fading, drying, and eventual cracking.
- Rain and moisture can lead to swelling, warping, and fungal growth.
- Foot traffic wears away protective coatings, especially in high-use areas like stairs or entertainment zones.
- Braais and outdoor furniture may cause heat, oil, or scratch marks.
- Decking around pools faces added pressure:
- Saltwater can accelerate coating breakdown and cause corrosion or dryness in timber.
- Chlorine may deteriorate oil- or water-based coatings faster.
- Coastal exposure can bring in salty air and humidity, which wears coatings down more rapidly.
Without regular treatment, these elements reduce the lifespan of your deck and lead to higher maintenance costs down the line.
Treatment Frequency by Timber Type
Not all timber behaves the same – some are denser, oilier, or more porous than others. Here’s how each of our main decking species performs and what it needs:
Balau
- Durability: High – a dense hardwood popular in SA.
- Maintenance: Should be treated bi-annually.
- Why: Balau is strong but prone to surface checking (small splits) if allowed to dry out. It holds oil well but fades to grey over time without UV protection.
Garapa
- Durability: Moderate to high – naturally resistant to rot.
- Maintenance: Treat bi-annually, possibly more frequently in harsh sun or wet zones.
- Why: Lighter in colour and less dense than Balau or Jatoba, Garapa can fade quicker and show dirt or marks more easily. It benefits from regular oiling to maintain its golden tone.
Jatoba
- Durability: Very high – extremely hard and dense.
- Maintenance: Treat bi-annually or more frequently depending on exposure.
- Why: Jatoba weathers well and resists decay naturally, but it will lose its rich reddish-brown hue without UV protection. Because it’s so dense, it may require penetrating oils for deep absorption.
Massaranduba
- Durability: Exceptional – often compared to Ipe.
- Maintenance: Treat bi-annually.
- Why: This timber is one of the densest available, making it incredibly durable and naturally resistant to insects and rot. However, it darkens and can develop surface cracks if not treated, especially around pools or in full sun.
Pine (CCA-treated)
- Durability: Moderate – must be treated and sealed.
- Maintenance: Bi-annually, depending on exposure. We also recommend you use 3 coats of Galseal or Woodoc when treating for superior results.
- Why: Pine is a softwood, pressure-treated to withstand moisture and insects, but it needs regular sealing or oiling to protect from cracking, splitting, and greying. Ideal for budget-conscious projects, but higher maintenance.
Choosing the Right Treatment Product
Somerset Timbers stocks a variety of trusted decking treatment brands – each suited to different budgets and maintenance needs. Click here to shop the below brands!
- Cost bracket: Affordable
- Best for: Budget-conscious projects or frequent DIY maintenance
- Why choose it: Galseal offers good short-term protection but requires more frequent reapplication (roughly every 6 months in exposed areas). Great for Pine hardwood decks.
- Cost bracket: Mid-range
- Best for: All timber decks – especially Balau, Garapa, Pine
- Why choose it: Woodoc has a variety of specialised products, from water-repellent sealers to UV-protective coatings. It balances quality and price, offering reliable protection with bi-annual application.
- Cost bracket: Premium
- Best for: High-end hardwood decks
- Why choose it: Osmo’s oil-based treatments are deep penetrating and long-lasting, meaning less frequent maintenance (every 6 months). It enhances the wood’s natural colour beautifully and is easy to spot-treat as needed.
Suggested Maintenance Schedule (South African Seasons)
Here’s a simple guide to help you plan (Based on Western Cape Seasons):
- Spring (September-November):
→ Ideal time for full treatment – clean and reseal your deck before summer exposure begins. - Summer (December-February):
→ Light clean only – sweep and wash down any dirt or braai residue. Avoid sealing in extreme heat. - Autumn (March-May):
→ Ideal time for full treatment – clean and reseal your deck before winter exposure begins. - Winter (June-August):
→ Thorough clean and inspection – remove algae, check for cracks or loose boards, prep for spring. (When we talk about a thorough clean, we mean you should use a decking cleaner such as oxalic acid or Osmo’s deck cleaner).
Final Tip: Keep It Clean
Regularly cleaning your deck helps coatings last longer and makes seasonal maintenance easier. Here’s how:
- Sweep weekly to remove leaves and debris.
- Wash with a mild timber cleaner or soapy water every few months.
- Avoid pressure washing – it can damage wood fibers.
- Clean spills or braai grease immediately to prevent staining.
In Summary
- Treat your deck at least twice a year or more depending on exposure.
- Know your timber type – maintenance varies.
- Choose a treatment product that matches your budget and expectations.
- Clean regularly, and time your deep maintenance for early spring.
