From Vision to Reality: How Papyrus Country Estate Created a Stunning Balau Deck and Timber Arch with Somerset Timbers

Some projects stand out because of their craftsmanship. Others because of the story behind them.

The timber deck and wedding arch at Papyrus Country Estate, situated on Winery Road in Firgrove, are special for both reasons.

Purchased just two years ago, Papyrus Country Estate has been lovingly restored and continually improved by Blake Duncan, the property's manager, and his family. Their vision has been to create a destination where people can celebrate life's most meaningful moments while surrounded by the natural beauty of the estate.

This latest project is perhaps the most meaningful of them all.

The handcrafted timber arch overlooking the estate's tranquil dam has been built as the venue where Blake's step dad and mom will exchange their wedding vows. A structure that represents not only quality craftsmanship, but family, commitment and lasting memories.

A Project Built with Passion

Rather than outsourcing the entire project, Blake and his team chose to build the structure themselves.

With guidance from the Somerset Timbers team, careful planning, and attention to detail, they created a feature that blends naturally into the surrounding landscape while showcasing the warmth and character that only real timber can provide.

The result is an elegant outdoor space that perfectly complements the estate's natural surroundings.

Choosing the Right Timber for the Job

When building a structure designed to withstand the elements while maintaining its appearance for years to come, selecting the correct materials is essential.

For the decking, Blake selected Somerset Timbers' 2.4 m and 3.9 m 19x90mm Balau Reeded Decking,a premium hardwood renowned for its exceptional durability, strength, and timeless appearance. The reeded profile not only enhances grip underfoot but also adds subtle texture that complements the estate's natural setting. Blake chose to flip the Balau decking around for a smooth finish, although the deck can be used in both ways.

The striking timber arch was constructed using SABS-approved structural pine, providing a strong, stable framework capable of supporting the impressive design while allowing the beauty of the surrounding landscape to remain the focal point.

Building a Foundation That Lasts

Beautiful decking starts long before the first board is installed.

A long-lasting timber structure depends on a properly designed substructure capable of resisting moisture, decay, and the demands of outdoor conditions.

For this reason, the supporting framework was manufactured using SABS-approved structural pine treated to H4 standard at Somerset Timbers' own SABS-approved treatment facility. Somerset Timbers ensures we follow the H-Class wood presesrvation system as given in the SANS standards in order to treat our timber (Choosing the right preservative treated timber – SAWPA)

H4 treatment is specifically designed for timber used in ground-contact and high-moisture environments, providing long-term protection against fungal decay and insect attack. By investing in the correct structural timber from the beginning, Blake ensured the deck was built on a foundation designed to perform for many years.

It's these often unseen details that make the difference between a timber project that lasts a few years and one that continues to perform for decades.

Quality Hardware Matters

No premium deck is complete without equally reliable fixings.

To secure the Balau decking, Blake chose Somerset Timbers' A4 Stainless Steel Deck Screws, specifically designed for hardwood decking applications.

Their superior corrosion resistance and long-term durability make them an excellent choice for outdoor timber projects, ensuring the deck maintains both its structural integrity and clean appearance over time.

Choosing premium fixings is one of the simplest ways to maximise the lifespan of any hardwood deck.

The Result

Today, the completed deck and Timber arch have become one of the standout features of Papyrus Country Estate.

Positioned alongside the estate's picturesque dam, the structure provides a breathtaking setting that combines timeless timber craftsmanship with the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. It is a space designed for celebrations, photographs, and memories that will last a lifetime.

For Somerset Timbers, projects like this perfectly demonstrate what can be achieved when premium materials are paired with practical guidance and a shared commitment to quality.

Following the success of the project, Blake commented on how impressed he was with both the quality of the products and the service received from Somerset Timbers, so much so that he has since returned for additional purchases as work on the estate continues.
